middle school is scary

The Houston Chronicle today has a story about how the transition from elementary school to middle school can be scary. This article resonated with me particularly because one of my nephews is making this transition this year.

“It’s even bigger than going to college,” Wendorf says. “By the time kids go to college, they’re older, and they can handle it. Eleven- and 12-year-olds are very young.”

Very young, that is, to juggle as many as eight classes, two different lockers, a school double or triple the size of their old campus, heightened academic expectations and a student body that ranges in size and physical development from little kid to practically grown.

That’s not even to mention an environment with more rules, firmer discipline and more serious consequences.

The include some tips that may, or may not, help your kids. It’s worth a read.
