In what seems like the most obvious next step, the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) is planning to offer a graduate degree in computer science through the new and popular massive open online course (MOOC) system. This would enable them to offer this usually expensive degree for the rock-bottom price of $6,600… a far cry from the $45,000 price tag it usually takes.
What is a MOOC? Wikipedia describes it as “an online course aimed at large-scale interactive participation and open access via the web. In addition to traditional course materials such as videos, readings, and problem sets, MOOCs provide interactive user forums that help build a community for the students, professors, and teaching assistants (TAs). MOOCs are a recent development in distance education.[”
