HISD closing magnet schools

The Houston Press is reporting that the Houston Independent School district is going to close 20 magnet schools. The reason? Because “not enough kids from outside their zoned neighborhoods are going to these particular schools.”

These are the schools.

    • Pleasantville
    • Wesley
    • West University
  • Middle Schools
    • Attucks
    • Deady
    • Dowling
    • Holland
    • Jackson
    • Key
    • Patrick Henry
  • High Schools
    • Jones
    • Lee
    • Madison
    • Sharpstown
    • Westbury
    • Wheatley
    • Worthing

In addition, the following magnet schools have been put on probationary status:

  • Elementary Schools
    • Crespo
    • Garden Villas
    • Helms
    • MacGregor
    • Pugh
    • Ross
    • Wainwright
  • Middle Schools
    • Hogg
    • Long
  • High Schools
    • Kashmere
    • Scarborough
    • Sterling
    • Washington

HISD adds the following information for parents and students:

Magnet applications for the 2014-2015 school year will be accepted from Nov. 4 to Dec. 20, 2013 for guaranteed consideration in the first round of applicants. For more information, contact the Office of School Choice at 713-556-6947 or visit houstonisd.org/magnetHISD School Choice fairs will be from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the following locations:

(School Choice Fairs for elementary school students transitioning to middle school in 2014-2015)

(School Choice Fairs for middle school students transitioning to high school in 2014-2015)
